Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA)
Physical Properties
- Appearance: It is a white crystalline powder or acicular crystal, non-toxic and odorless.
- Solubility: Slightly soluble in water. At 25℃, the solubility in water is approximately 0.0012g per 100g of water. It can dissolve in alkaline solutions, is slightly soluble in hot ethanol, and is insoluble in organic solvents such as ether, glacial acetic acid, and chloroform.
- Melting Point: Relatively high, approximately 425℃ (decomposition occurs).
- Density: The relative density is approximately 1.510g/cm³.
Chemical Properties
- Acidity: The molecule contains two carboxyl groups, showing acidity. It can undergo a neutralization reaction with alkalis to form the corresponding salts.
- Esterification reaction: It can undergo an esterification reaction with alcohols to form terephthalate esters, which is an important reaction in the production of polyesters.
- Stability: It is stable under normal temperature and pressure. However, when exposed to high temperatures, high humidity or in contact with strong oxidants, chemical reactions may occur.
Application Approaches
Polyester fiber: It is the main raw material for the production of polyester fibers (such as polyester). Polyester fibers have the advantages of high strength, good elasticity, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, easy washing and quick drying, etc., and are widely used in the fields of clothing, home textiles, industrial fabrics, etc.

Polyester film: It is used for the production of polyester films, which have good transparency, glossiness, mechanical properties and barrier properties. It can be applied in the fields of packaging, electronics, optics, etc., such as food packaging, encapsulation of electronic components, backplanes of solar cells, etc.

Polyester for bottles: It is widely used in the manufacture of packaging containers such as beverage bottles and edible oil bottles. Polyester for bottles has good transparency, barrier properties and mechanical strength, which can effectively maintain the quality of beverages and food.

Coatings: It can be used for the production of unsaturated polyester coatings, which have good corrosion resistance, wear resistance and glossiness, and are widely applied to the coating in the fields of construction, furniture, automobiles, etc.

Plastics: By copolymerizing with other raw materials, engineering plastics such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) can be produced, which are used in fields such as electronics and electrical appliances, and automotive parts.

Pharmaceuticals: In the pharmaceutical field, Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of some drugs.

Dyes: It is an important raw material for the synthesis of certain dyes. Through reactions with other compounds, dyes with specific colors and properties can be prepared.
